Background of the study
Student registration is an essential process in every educational institution. Traditionally, secondary schools have employed manual registration systems, which involve paper-based forms, physical record-keeping, and face-to-face interactions with school administration staff. While manual systems are simple to implement, they can be time-consuming, prone to errors, and inefficient, especially as student populations grow (Ahmed & Ali, 2023). In contrast, automated registration systems use software tools to streamline the registration process, reducing errors, saving time, and improving efficiency by digitizing student records and automating the process of enrollment.

In Lokoja Local Government Area, secondary schools are beginning to explore automated registration systems as an alternative to traditional manual methods. This study aims to compare the effectiveness, efficiency, and user satisfaction of manual versus automated student registration systems in secondary schools in Lokoja.

Statement of the problem
Despite the advantages of automated registration systems, many secondary schools in Lokoja still rely on manual methods due to a lack of awareness, financial constraints, or resistance to change. The comparative effectiveness of both systems in terms of accuracy, time-saving, and overall user satisfaction remains unclear. This study will assess the performance of manual and automated registration systems in secondary schools in Lokoja.

Objectives of the study

  1. To compare the efficiency and effectiveness of manual and automated student registration systems in secondary schools in Lokoja.

  2. To assess the level of user satisfaction with manual and automated student registration systems in Lokoja secondary schools.

  3. To identify the challenges and benefits of implementing automated student registration systems in Lokoja secondary schools.

Research questions

  1. How do manual and automated student registration systems compare in terms of efficiency and effectiveness in secondary schools in Lokoja?

  2. What is the level of user satisfaction with manual and automated student registration systems in Lokoja secondary schools?

  3. What challenges and benefits do schools face when transitioning from manual to automated student registration systems?

Significance of the study
This study will provide essential insights into the advantages and challenges of adopting automated registration systems in secondary schools. The findings will guide school administrators and policymakers in making informed decisions about system upgrades, ensuring better efficiency in student enrollment processes.

Scope and limitations of the study
The study focuses on secondary schools in Lokoja Local Government Area, Kogi State, and compares manual and automated student registration systems. It does not extend to other regions or educational institutions.

Definitions of terms

  • Manual student registration system: A traditional, paper-based method of registering students for classes and maintaining student records.

  • Automated student registration system: A computerized system used to register students, process their data, and generate student records automatically.

  • User satisfaction: The degree to which students, teachers, and administrators are satisfied with the registration system's efficiency and usability.
